Waypoint Wilderness Medical Consultants (a division of Metzger Medical Services PLLC) provides medical readiness planning and field-response guidance for solo adventurers, private teams, and commercial outdoor organizations. Founded and led by an experienced Emergency Nurse Practitioner and Air Force Reserve officer, Waypoint combines advanced clinical practice with austere-environment preparation through individualized medical risk assessment, primary care discussion support, medical packing planning, environmental health considerations, and practical medical response guidance.
Our Core Services
Individual Medical Readiness Consultation: Personalized medical screening, private consultation, primary care discussion guidance, environmental health considerations, medical packing planning, and condition-specific medical response guidance.
Small Group Medical Planning (2–4 Participants): Confidential participant screening and individualized primary care discussion guides combined with group medical risk assessment, master medical packing planning, medical response guidance, and a pre-departure briefing.
Large Group & Organizational Package (5–8 Participants): Confidential participant screening, targeted primary care follow-up recommendations, aggregate group medical risk assessment, large-group medical packing planning, staff and leader medical response guidance, and a medical readiness briefing. Additional participants and individualized readiness upgrades are available.

Meet the Founders
Waypoint Wilderness Medical was built at the intersection of advanced clinical medicine, austere-environment readiness, and operational experience.
Founded by Shana Metzger, DNP, APRN, an Air Force Reserve officer and Emergency Nurse Practitioner with more than 13 years of emergency and rural medicine experience, Waypoint provides advanced medical preparation for remote and backcountry environments. With specialized training in deployment health planning for austere settings and experience as a military instructor in Tactical Combat Casualty Care (TCCC) and Walking Blood Bank protocols, Shana directs Waypoint’s clinical services, including participant medical screening, environmental and altitude health preparation, primary care discussion support, medical packing planning, and field medical response guidance.
Co-founder and operational manager Christopher Mendez, MS, USMC-Retired, brings more than 20 years of U.S. Marine Corps experience as an Intelligence Specialist, with expertise in intelligence analysis, environmental and route-risk assessment, and mission planning. His background supports Waypoint’s broader expedition-planning capabilities and separately contracted operational risk and emergency-planning services.
Together, our leadership combines clinical expertise, operational experience, intelligence analysis, and remote-environment preparedness. We share a passion for the safe, intentional exploration of God’s creation—and a commitment to preserving it for future generations by donating 20% of all profits directly to wilderness conservation organizations.
